MEETING OUR PROVIDERS

UNDERTANDING MEDICAL PROVIDERS

Medical Providers MD, DO, DNP, APRN (NP, CNS, CRNA, CNM) and PA are highly trained professionals licensed to:

  • Diagnose and treat medical conditions

  • Prescribe medications

  • Perform procedures

  • Manage treatment plans for patients

Each credential represents a different educational path and professional background, but all of them play a vital role in providing comprehensive, patient-centered care.

MD – Doctor of Medicine

  • An MD is a fully licensed physician who has completed medical school and residency training.

  • In a clinic, the MD often serves as Medical Director, ensuring treatments are safe, effective, and compliant with state regulations.

DO – Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

  • A DO is also a fully licensed physician, similar to an MD, but with additional training in the body’s musculoskeletal system and a more holistic approach to care.

DNP – Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree

  • Unlike a PhD (which is research-focused), a DNP is a Doctorate Degree in practice-focused, with advanced clinical training, they are LICENSED to diagnose, treat, and in many states prescribe medications, often serving as a patient’s primary care provider.

  • They can serve in leadership roles, guiding other medical providers.

  • Focus on quality improvement and advanced patient care.

APRN / Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

  • An APRN is a registered nurse with advanced graduate-level education (Master’s or Doctorate) and advanced clinical training, they are LICENSED to diagnose, treat, and in many states prescribe medications, often serving as a patient’s primary care provider too.

PA – Physician Assistant

  • A PA is a licensed medical professional who has completed a master’s program in physician assistant studies.

  • They work always in collaboration with an MD or DO for oversight.

THE DIFERRENCE ABOUT MEDICAL PROVIDERS (MD, DO, DNP, APRN, PA) AND RN

RN – Registered Nurse

An RN is not considered a medical provider but a licensed nurse.
They play a vital supportive role in patient care by:

  • Carrying out doctors’ and providers’ orders

  • Administering medications (within their scope of practice)

  • Monitoring vital signs and patient progress

  • Providing education, counseling, and follow-up care

  • Assisting with procedures and coordinating care

Key Difference:

  • Medical Providers (MD, DO, DNP, APRN, PA) → Can diagnose, prescribe, and create treatment plans.

  • RN (Registered Nurse) → Cannot diagnose or prescribe

RN – Registered Nurse

  • An RN provides direct patient care, assists with treatments, and ensures clients are comfortable and informed.

  • They are highly skilled in IV therapy, injections, post-treatment care, and patient education.

  • RNs often bridge the gap between patients and providers MD, DO, DNP, APRN (NPs, CNS, CRNA, CNM) and PA, making sure every detail of care is smooth and supportive.
